Early-Stage Project Development

Lead Case Selection

Rosnik believe in  “get it right the first time”. A combination of fit-for-purpose tools and the right skill sets to collaboratively attain capital efficiency and meet business objectives of our clients. Brownfield changes requires proper front-end evaluation based on an optimized base case portraying the existing capability of process units. Avoiding this step can result in costly changes, regret capital, and an asset that does not meet business objectives.

Rosnik will evaluate process alternatives based on the optimized base case, to select the lead cases. In this stage we look deeply into the available technologies that suit the project needs and try to utilize unused existing unit/equipment capacities and simple debottlenecks to reduce the project cost. Our team will also look at possibilities for tie ups with outside utility providers.

The evaluation of systems is inclusive of all aspects of the facility from processing, energy, and oil movements / logistics.  We have the skills to improve the granularity of the analytics. We have no allegiance to technology providers or EPC firms, thereby allowing for evaluation and selection of what are truly the best options for a client. Our holistic approach can result in a lead case with very competitive cost and a simple schedule to execute.

Gate 2 Basis(Project Go No Go Gate)

Once the lead case is selected, we will develop preliminary heat and material balance and equipment information for a Gate 2 cost and schedule estimate.  We can get some of this work done at our high efficiency center in India to substantially reduce the cost. We will also help our clients  to start preliminary work on environmental permit. Customers can expect preliminary bench marking of the project cost and schedule as well.

Our Strategic Development division can develop probability weighted cost estimates or conventional cost & schedule estimates.

Depending on the customer needs,  a preliminary HAZOP and constructability review can also be developed as well. We will optimize the design further before or after Gate 2 engaging experienced Process, Civil, Electrical & Machinery engineers at a high level to substantially reduce the project cost and speed up the schedule.

Rosnik can put together Gate 2 packages if required.

FAQ

Early Stage Project Development is the phase where a project concept is transformed into a technically and commercially viable project. It includes evaluating technical options, defining the project scope, identifying risks, preparing preliminary engineering, and developing cost and schedule estimates. This work enables organisations to make informed investment decisions before progressing to Front-End Engineering Design (FEED).

Decisions made during the early stages of a project have the greatest influence on its final cost, schedule, and overall success. Investing in proper early-stage planning helps organisations:

  • Reduce project uncertainty
  • Improve CAPEX estimate accuracy
  • Identify technical risks early
  • Compare multiple project options
  • Minimise engineering changes during execution
  • Improve project approval confidence

A structured early-stage development process significantly increases the likelihood of delivering projects on time and within budget.

Rosnik Solutions provides multidisciplinary engineering support, including:

  • Business Case Development
  • Concept Evaluation
  • Technology Selection
  • Process Engineering
  • Preliminary Equipment Sizing
  • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
  • Preliminary P&IDs
  • Plot Plans
  • CAPEX Cost Estimation
  • Project Schedule Development
  • Risk Assessment
  • FEED Planning

These deliverables establish a solid foundation for successful project execution.

Early Stage Project Development determines whether a project should proceed and how it should be executed. It focuses on evaluating alternatives, defining scope, assessing feasibility, and preparing preliminary engineering.

Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) begins once the preferred option has been selected. FEED develops detailed engineering deliverables, cost estimates, procurement strategies, and execution plans needed to move the project into procurement and construction.

In simple terms:

  • Early Stage Development → Decide the best project option.
  • FEED → Prepare that option for execution.

Our Early Stage Project Development services support capital projects across:

  • Downstream Oil & Gas
  • Refineries
  • Petrochemical Plants
  • Chemical Processing
  • Energy Infrastructure
  • Process Manufacturing

These services are particularly valuable for new facilities, plant expansions, debottlenecking projects, revamps, and major process modifications.

Early engineering identifies technical, commercial, and execution risks before significant capital is committed. By validating project assumptions, comparing alternatives, and preparing realistic cost and schedule estimates, organisations can reduce project uncertainty, avoid costly design changes, and improve stakeholder alignment before FEED and construction begin.

Early Stage Project Development should begin immediately after a project opportunity or business need has been identified. Starting early allows organisations to evaluate multiple solutions, establish realistic budgets and schedules, and ensure that only technically and commercially viable projects move forward to FEED and execution.
